The “Bridle”

Early this morning I clearly noticed something as I went into my morning prayer, which is typically silent, and still.

Sometimes when I am in prayer, nothing happens at all. For the most part, I see nothing, and feel nothing. But other times, like this morning, I sense what I am calling a “bridle.” When I say “sense,” I mean it is palpable. Real.

There is a real Force that is having some type of effect on me. It is not total, it does not wash away all my thoughts and bad feelings. But it has the effect of moderating everything.

When I first began this type of prayer some forty years ago (crazy–right? How come I’m not walking on water by now?!), I was looking (and sometimes experienced) flashing lights, and “flashing” insights. I was desperate for change, and you might say impatient for it.

But one thing I discovered, was there is no “final” insight that frees you–at least it hasn’t worked that way for me. It is the daily insights. And in a way, progress with prayer is no different than progress with the violin! It’s the accumulation of daily practice that pays dividends.

The “bridle”–though I clearly notice it–can easily be overlooked if you are not paying attention. I believe it is always there, but throughout the day we are busy, and have thoughts in our heads, and emotions in our heads and hearts. And even in prayer, we can be caught up with asking God for something, for instance, without noticing what is actually going on inside ourselves.

It’s a noisy world. We have to earn our quiet! 🙂

I have learned to appreciate the “bridle.” I guess we are the wild horse, that needs taming! But as with a horse, a bridle is meant to guide us. Not dominate us, just guide us.

And perhaps it is best that God doesn’t heal us all at once. Perhaps he is testing us, to see if we will keep coming back to Him. If He did heal us all at once, would we come back to Him? To be honest, the main reason I continue to pray every day and night is so that He will continue draining me of my “sins.” If He healed me all at once, I likely would have just taken the gift and gone my way. I wish I could say otherwise, but I think that’s what probably would have happened.

I hope that you have discovered the “bridle,” and are willing to look for it every day. If you don’t notice it, I recommend you spend some time every morning and night seeking it. Just close your eyes, and touch your finger tips (and thumbs) together and wait patiently on the Lord (that’s the way I do it, but do what works for you). God promised He would one day “put My laws in their hearts, and write them in their minds.” That day has come, once Jesus left the Earth and the Holy Spirit came down on men and women.

If you are a sincere reader of my posts, I believe you are seeking the “bridle,” whether you thought of it that way or not. I wish you Peace.
