Spiritual Drunkenness

  • by

I have seen a condition in people that I would best describe as “spiritual drunkenness.” It is when an otherwise sober-minded person falls into or finds themselves in a state where it is clear that when you look into their eyes, they are being acted on by another state or entity.

The sober look is gone, and something else is there, something that reflects the type of sin they harbor. They may be experiencing a mental sexual pleasure, or a rage, or a quick leap away from logic into ILL-logic.

This has helped me to find forgiveness for trespassers in my life, because I have seen that the person is not acting in their right mind. The person I knew has taken a “vacation.”

The phenomenon can be akin to a record skipping. Many of you may not be old enough to remember putting an album or “45” (named for making 45 revolutions per minute) on a turntable and playing it. When the record is scratched deeply enough, it can skip and even play the same section over and over.

When I refer to the record being “scratched deeply enough,” I am referring to spiritual/emotional trauma. This kind of trauma is so little understood, yet I believe it is the #1 reason for almost all of the evil in this world. It also appears to me that early trauma is typically the most ingrained and longest lasting. And trauma that is not dealt with will result in the repeat of aberrant behaviors until it is properly dealt with, whether that happens through prayer/meditation, or some type of therapy.

Two People

A person can think and speak clearly in a rational state, and suddenly speak irrationally. You are dealing with, in effect, two different people.

The common binder here is an unconscious state.

I have my own unconscious states, as we all do.

I know I have a certain unconsciousness when I eat, for example. One interesting thing that happens when I start eating is that songs play “loudly” in my head, as if to distract me. Perhaps I’m eating something I shouldn’t be, or eating too much (I have that one bad!). How often do we want to watch TV or videos, listen to music, read, or otherwise distract ourselves when we eat? There’s a reason. Something we don’t want to see.

And who is “playing the music”?

But back to the phenomenon of the record “skipping.” This skipping portion is the most important part of all, because it’s vitally important that we begin to pay attention to our “vacations” from reality. Because this is the time WE are not acting–something else is acting through us.

We cannot ignore this, or make excuses for it. We have to see it for what it is, and if necessary, to ask God to take it from us.

We may use something that helps us to evade reality. It may be sex, drugs, rock ‘n roll, food (of course), or any number of things. It may be the judgment we have for others–how “good” or “bad” we are in comparison–that is our drug of choice.

And we should not try to convince ourselves that we are only using something “a little bit.” It’s like the “I can quit anytime I want” classic line we’ve heard about the alcoholic.

God doesn’t want us “part drunk.” He wants us sober, so that we can be aware of the promptings of His Spirit. It’s like thinking we can safely drive with a few drinks in us. There is no safety outside of our sober connection to the Spirit.
